Enterprises are deploying a large number of mobile devices, and that trend shows no signs of diminishing. The performance of mobile devices continues to improve, and the range of business use continues to expand. Under these circumstances, it is important for enterprises to better protect mobile devices. There is a growing need for more comprehensive "enterprise mobility management" (EMM) products as well as "mobile device management" (MDM) products.

MDM products focus on protecting the device's OS and hardware. But over the last few years, EMM products that include "mobile application management" (MAM) functionality in addition to MDM functionality have become increasingly popular. Mobile device security is highly application-dependent. All major EMM vendors have begun to focus on the ability to manage data, content, and applications, apart from the MDM ability to manage security at the device level.
